Thanksgiving was uneventful. Rob's family decided to go small-- well, it wasn't exactly their decision-- so he managed to escape early. Some driving was done, and about midnight things started getting interesting...
Look out Michael Jackson, it's the new King of Pop! The most stunning example of the commercialization of Christmas: a throne for Santa made completely from cases of Coke and Sprite.
After we left K-mart, we noticed things were getting quite foggy. Going on the theory that fog tends to be thickest at the coast, we went to the Seal Beach Pier. We didn't see any rotting zombie lepers, however.
What's Seal Beach without seals? A small statue on the pier gives homage to the marine mammal that gives the city it's name. (Because the fog was so thick, condensation on the lens was inevitable. Thus the white spots on the photograph.)
Later, we stopped at Denny's for a midnight snack. Paul has this annoying habit of shredding his pancakes which drives Rob up the wall.
We did record the conversation at Denny's. It's a good thing we did, too.
The evening (morning?) was made interesting by our waitress. She refused to be photographed, but she was a good sport about the recorder. She must have been bored, because during our meal she kept getting involved in the conversation. At one point, she spontaneously tried to guess Rob's astrological sign, going through eleven of the twelve symbols of the zodiac before giving up. (It was the twelfth sign, the one that she couldn't remember.) At another point, she seeked shelter from a customer desperate to prove his worthiness to her (Audio file, 695K). She also was around to hear Rob and Paul explain the finer points of "ego-surfing" to Jason (Audio file, 203K).
(That's right, audio!)
Move over, Satanic Verses, it's the Satanic License Plate!
