August 15:
Playing with Fire

A dangerous combination...

Much research has been done on the subject of inflammable breakfast foods, and we at the Smogmobile Research Labs felt that the SRL must be in this lucrative field before all the research grants were used up.

It was fortunate that Paul managed to procure a toaster. Said toaster was intermittently failing to eject the warmed bread foodstuffs at the end of the cooking cycle (hence its donation to the SRL); we insured this with the appropriate use of packing tape.

REMEMBER: Don't try this at home. We're trained professionals.

For the longest time, the toaster did nothing but smoke. We were beginning to believe that we might have been taken by an elaborate con job. Then suddenly...

...flames! At their peak, the flames were about 24 inches (60 centimeters) high, and bright enough to turn off the automatic flash on my camera.

Even after the power was removed, the toaster continued to glow for quite some time.

The carbonized remains of one of the Pop-Tarts. The above photograph is at actual scale when viewed at 72 DPI.

The whole event proved too exciting for Paul, who fell asleep during the post-event analysis.
