As we have mentioned before, our goal was to drive over all five bridges that crisscross the San Francisco Bay. The only bridge that we failed to cross by this time was the Dumbarton (Route 84). Since it was close, we decided to do it on the day Paul was to leave. Along the way we found another interesting spot in the South Bay: serendipity in action.
The original plan was to zip over the Dumbarton Bridge and return via the 237 to Mountain View, pick up Paul's luggage, and then go to SFO.
Then Rob saw the Sign. While hardly a religious revelation, it did pique our curiosity enough to prompt an investigation. We got off the freeway and made a few bizarre turns until we found what we were looking for.
What we found was this:
The majority of the refuge was off limits, even to foot traffic.
Flowers of all sorts peppered the landscape.
This being a wetland, there were lots of creeks and marshes...
...and, of course, large patches of scum.
The reserve also contained the relics of a ghost town. The park rangers used the old buildings for storage.
The rest of the day was uneventful. We risked life and limb trying to get into San Francisco Airport (est. time of completion: AD 2340), Paul got on his plane and went home.
