May 10:
Signal Hill; Dinner at El Torito

The previous night, after a greasy dinner at Denny’s, was spent driving around and chatting. At one point we found ourselves on Signal Hill. Signal Hill is famous in Long Beach for having a very steep street named, appropriately enough, Hill Street.

After getting giddy driving up and down Hill Street, Rob decided to photograph it for the records. Unfortunately, the photos did not come out. The next day, Paul and Rob returned to Hill Street to get more photos.

Rob photographed this woman just for the hell of it. A cluster of girls in the car opposite her started freaking out after he took the photograph. What, they never saw a camera before?

Paul noted the irony of this: plastic (a petroleum product) being used to protect a hill that was defoliated from oil drilling.

The *$&!$*#! disco ball got in the way of this closeup of the plastic-covered hill.

We approach the slope cautiously. Losing a wheel at this point would not be funny.

Extreme hill-driving... SUUUUUURGE!!!!!

Hill Street is not just a little bump in the road. It has a sharp slope and one can really pick up speed before reaching the bottom. Pity they put stop signs at the intersection...

Signal Hill is famous for being a major oil field. Its first oil well was drilled on the corner of Hill and Panoramic.

Just another photo of an oil rig. That weird black pyramid in the distance is the top of the Cal State Long Beach’s Sports Pavilion.

Later that evening, the Smogmobile Crew—consisting of Paul, Jason, and Rob—went to El Torito for dinner. The conversation was fascinating, which again raises the question: When will Paul ever finish uploading those audio files?

Tastes MUCH cooler

The SRL has done some qualitative research and has determined that a Winterfresh mouth does not taste much cooler. One researcher even found it “spicy.”
