October 6:
A Late Start; Paul Has Indigestion

We started October 6 late: Paul woke up late, Rob wanted to finish reading Salamandastron, and Jason had an errand to run. The first order of business that night was food; we decided to take Jason's grandmother to Hof's Hut. We snapped this photo of the two girls behind her: they were employees of the restaurant, and bad-mouthing it at every possibility.

True Story: The crew of the Smogmobile has had a bad history with chain restaurants. During one roadtrip, we stopped at Denny's and bumped into Dan Spisak and a set of his gaming friends. They invited us to join them, but the table wasn't large enough so Jason and Rob had to sit at a small two-seater a few feet away.

We started talking about relatives, and friends of relatives, and the discussion slipped over to Jason's Uncle's friend Guido. Guido had very poor dental hygiene habits, leading to what Jason described as "...teeth that looked like broken Butterfingers. The worst part was when he ground his teeth together and the pus would ooze out from the sockets...."

This poor young girl who was part of some pep squad that was eating nearby gave us the most disturbed look we have ever seen and squealed as loud as possible, "That's the most dis-gust-ing thing I've ever heard!"

Needless to say, the restaurant went dead silent until Jason and Rob broke up in hysterics...

The Smogmobile 2000 was giving us problems that night. Fortunately, Jason had rented a car that week so he could take his grandmother places. (His other car was still non-functional.)

Somewhere around Signal Hill in Long Beach we found this bumper sticker on the back of a car owned by what could only be described as a "sweet young thing." Unfortunately, she ditched us quickly.

This was the first of many bathroom stops we had to make along the way. Obviously, Hof's Hut and Paul's digestive system were having some problems. Jason demonstrates his proficiency with the Full-Bladder Hustle as he waits for Paul to exit.

It was about this time when we decided that this night was a wash. Paul's stomach was forcing us to stop far too frequently and we were getting tired. Although, we did meet this gas station philosopher who had some interesting-- if incoherent-- comments about people who buy food in gas station mini-marts.
