The Wabe → The Roadtrip → The Roadtrip Reports
Roadtrip.
When normal people are safe at home asleep, when semi-normal people are out FRPing, we hop on the non-Information SuperHighway™.
Usually it’s just Paul Bunch and Rob Menke; but occasionally we are honored with the presence of Jason Sellers, who more often than not sits in the back of the car and falls asleep amongst the various feminist pamphlets, lounge chairs, and dancing paraphernalia that makes up Paul’s back seat.
Other people have been allowed into the back seat, such as Dan “Flash” Spisak, Chris Bunch (Paul’s brother), and the mysterious “The Schech.” Nobody has seen “The Schech” for years, but he still manages to slip into the conversations.
Half of the fun of these midnight trips is complaining about Paul’s car, which we have dubbed the “Smogmobile 2000,” in honor of its predilection to produce billowing clouds of noxious blue smoke. Still, it’s not as scary as the “Moldsmobile,” that 1960’s Oldsmobile that got about a quarter-of-a-mile to the gallon and occasionally burst into flames.
Not all roadtrips are fun and games. Once we were stranded in the middle of nowhere (which is 12 miles west of Blythe, California) because of our own stupidity. Since then, we’ve been careful to stick to the confines of the L.A. freeway system. It’s safer, it’s easier, and in many ways, it’s much more interesting.
Our long-term objective is to get Paul’s low-tech car on the high-tech Internet live. But for now, we’re content with getting it here on audio. We’ve got the equipment; now all we need is the time. (Which, despite appearances, is not as plentiful as it sounds, with Rob having to drive down from Mountain View and other distractions.)
Any questions? We’ll be happy to answer them. And be sure to take plenty of notes: there will be a quiz on this later.
