The Naming of Cats is a Difficult Matter…

I had a contest to name my cat. The results were… depressing. A few serious entries (“Apollo,” “Fortuna,” “Ebony”); a few joke entries (“Tire Striped Tabby,” “Human Scum”): only six entries in all, of which ”Damnthing” was my favorite (“That's what she’s going to get called anyway. Damnthing clawed up the sofa. Damnthing's vet visits are expensive. Damnthing...”). But since my mother said she would disown me if I called her that, I settled on Katrina Blackthorne. That way, I could:

• Still call her “Kat” and have a snide reply ready whenever anyone whined, “Haven’t you named that poor thing yet?”; and
• Call her “Katie Kitty” in such a sugary way as to give a diabetic coma to anyone within a fifty meter radius.

Ah, yes. Life with Katie is never dull.
